Features
The leaves are numbered, incorrectly, in ink manuscript Roman numerals at the top right of rectos.
On the front pastedown, in the hand of Eugène Paillet, is a note in black ink manuscript: collationné complet par Monsieur Olgar Thierry, sous-directeur à la bibliothèque nationale. 19 Janvier 1883.
In pencil manuscript on the verso of the front free endpaper are notes in French giving details of the edition.
Two initials on the first leaf are supplied in ink manuscript.
Some water damage to the final twenty leaves.
Bindings
Late fifteenth-century binding of full vellum over pasteboard. The upper and lower covers are fastened with vellum ties. Written on the upper cover in early ink manuscript are the words: liber confessionii et retractam S. Augustini. The spine has two raised bands. Written on the spine in later ink manuscript, probably eighteenth-century, are the words: S Augustini. Mediol. 1475. The book is preserved in an oak box backed with pigskin with words tooled in black: St Augustin Confessios. Brotherton Collection. Mediol 1475. Size: 198 x 190mm. Leaf size: 190 x 140mm.
Provenance
At the top of the first leaf in black ink manuscript is the inscription: Franc[iscus] Castellus ordinar[ius] possidet. M.D.xxxj.
At the top of the front free endpaper, in black ink manuscript, is the autograph of Eugène Paillet (1829-1901). When Paillet sold his collection to the Paris booksellers Morgand et Fatout in 1887, this work was listed no.34 in the catalogue they produced.
Small black and white armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
