Bindings


Twentieth-century binding of full pigskin over wooden boards. Both the upper and lower covers are blind-stamped with a border of triple fillets inside which is a diamond formed from triple fillets. The spine has three raised bands with triple fillets either side and also at the head and tail. Blind-stamped in the second panel are the words: Tractatus Excommunicationibus etc - Antoninus. Blind-stamped in the third panel: Brotherton Collection. Blind-stamped in the bottom panel are the words: Sina nota sed Venetiis c. 1476. There is indistinct lettering in early ink manuscript on the fore-edge and tail-edge. Size: 245 x 182mm. Leaf size: 232 x 165mm.

Provenance

Small black and white armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
