Biography or history
Dare is a unique collaboration between the University of Leeds and Opera North, the only one of its kind in the UK, created to develop material and events that would be inaccessible to each partner acting alone. The collaboration was established in 2006 and has since begun over 108 projects involving theatre practitioners and university members in an assortment of roles. The project aims to build ‘connections between the arts and contemporary society’. The relationship reaches further than simply performance. University students participate in placements at Opera North and Opera North conducts annual seminars at the university, furthermore the project is interested in public engagement and has projects to achieve this, eg primary school workshops. Dare is also able to offer scholarships to undertake research and offers public lectures. Dare has attracted over £1 million in investment since 2006 and has achieved national acclaim. Projects are funded by departmental budgets and
external sources.
