Description
Japanese woodblock print. Japanese title is 'San shibai kabuki kyogen no zu'. From the series 'New Perpsective Pictures' ('Shinpan uki-e').
Depicts the interior of a theatre with a full view of the stage and both sides of the auditorium filled with people, the actor Danjuro passing along a raised platform among the audience. The actors are performing the popular, flamboyant 'Shibaraku' scene.
This print is of particular value in documenting the design of Kabuki theatres in the mid-Edo period (1700s).
