Description

A series of twelve smaller-size prints by Utagawa Hiroshige (also known as Ando Hiroshige or Ichiryūsai) illustrating the eleven-act Chūshingura play, Accompanying label from exhibition states that this play is a Japanese romance glorifying 'chiushin' or loyal-heartedness, 'the supreme virtue of the Bushi class under the old order of things that passed away with the year 1868'. Specifically, Chūshingura plays are known for portraying fictionalised accounts of the story of the Forty-Seven Ronin.
