Description

Two editions were issued in 1705. In the first, there is no imprint information except the date. In the second, the title-page has been reset and includes a full imprint; the address also includes text not present in the first edition.


First four leaves are letterpress, consisting of the title-page, an address To the Reader (unnumbered), and a poem Upon the performance of penmanship by N. Tate (pp. 1-4).


Signatures (of letterpress): [A]-B².


The other 17 leaves are engraved sample plates, printed two to a leaf, lettered by Shelley and engraved by J. Nutting.

Additional description

First edition. Bound as an oblong quarto, originally folio, 33 engraved plates and one leaf of letterpress text the plates cut in half (except the dedicatory leaf, which is folded to fit) and bound as a quarto volume wanting the letterpress title page and two leaves of letterpress text, but with the Address to the Reader by Thomas Read (also not cut in half but folded).
