Description
The miniature depicts the angel Gabriel announcing the birth of Christ to the Virgin Mary. Gabriel holds a sceptre and wears a coronet with a cross. Mary kneels by a small altar, under a green canopy. A prayer book with rubrics painted in red lies open on the altar. The Holy Ghost in form of a dove descends upon the Virgin inside a sun-burst halo, and a group of angels gather behind the canopy. The scene is depicted inside a building in the style of late gothic architecture. The full border is decorated with pinks, pea flowers, speedwells, columbines, irises, pimpernel, strawberries, butterflies and a fly.
Context: Hours of the Virgin: Matins
