Nineteenth-century French full brown goatskin binding by Chambolle-Duru whose name is gold-tooled on the turn-in below the front pastedown. The upper and lower covers are blind-tooled with a border of squares enclosing circles which contain a coat of arms with three fleurs-du-lys. Inside the border is an elaborate design of stylised foliage. The book has gilt edges and the board edges are gold-tooled with double fillets. The turn-ins are also gold-tooled with two rows of double fillets containing a design of stylised foliage. The pastedowns are of red marbled paper featuring a combination of the comb and curl patterns in red, yellow, green, blue and cream. The spine has five raised bands and four of the panels are blind-tooled with a design of leaves. Gold-tooled in the second and third panels are the words: Historia Alexandri Magni 1486. The book has a ribbon register in green, orange and yellow striped silk. Watermark of a horned bull's head surmounted by a staff and cross on the title page. Size: 278 x 210mm. Leaf size: 273 x 200mm.
Coloured armorial bookplate of Sir Edward Allen Brotherton on the front pastedown. The book was most likely acquired before 17 June 1929 when Brotherton was created Baron Brotherton of Wakefield.
