Copious marginal and textual annotations in sixteenth-century black ink manuscript with manicules and occasional lines of music.


The margins have been cropped.


Wanting the blank leaf LL8 following leaf CCVII.


Bindings


Eighteenth-century half-binding of pale brown calf and paper over pasteboard. The spine has five raised bands and is decorated with gold-tooled fleurons. Gold-tooled on the spine are the words: Horatius ed. Argent 1498. The pastedowns are of paste paper with a combed pattern in red. The book has red edges and a green silk ribbon register. Size: 306 x225mm. Leaf size: 300 x 210mm.

Provenance

Nineteenth-century inscription in black ink manuscript in Latin on the verso of the first front flyleaf facing the title page, signed: Oelsner, Wratisl. 1818. This is most likely Johann Wilhelm Oelsner.


Armorial bookplate on the front pastedown: Audenham House, Herts. The bookplate bears the motto: Tenax propositi. This is the motto of the Gibbs family (barons Aldenham). The work is listed on p.206 of the 1914 "Catalogue of the Aldenham library".


Written in black ink manuscript on the recto of the first front flyleaf: Henry H. Gibbs, St Dunstans 1865. Below in the same hand in pencil manuscript: Bought of Ellis £5.5s.


Cutting from a sale catalogue on the front pastedown with a price of £50. Gibbs' libary was sold my Sotherby's in 1937.
