Bindings
Early sixteenth-century German binding of pigskin over wooden boards. The upper and lower covers are blind-tooled with a panel design of multiple fillets containing repeating patterns of stylised foliage and flowers. The spine has four raised bands and is decorated with diagonal fillets. In the second panel are the remains of a paper label with writing in ink manuscript: Bekenhaub Dictionnarius 1499. In the fourth panel are the remains of another paper label, now indistinct. A loss to the head of the spine has been restored with vellum. On a stub preceding leaf CCLIIII are six fragments of vellum with rubricated manuscript which align with the raised bands on the spine. There is evidence of two metal clasps with the remains of hasps on the lower cover. Holes at the head of the upper cover suggest that the book may have been chained. There is indistinct lettering in ink manuscript on the head-edge. Size: 352 x 248 mm. Leaf size: 338 x 232mm. UKLeU

Date of accession to the Library of the University of Leeds can be identified as 24 April 1925.
