"Dieser Essay aus dem schriftlichen Nachlass von Paul Klee ist nach vierjähriger pädagogischer Tätigkeit am Bauhaus in Weimar entstanden. Er bildete die Unterlage zu einer Rede, welche der Künstler, anlässlich der Eröffnung einer Ausstellung moderner Kunst 1924 im Museum Jena und in Gegenwart seiner eigenen Werke, gehalten hat."

Typewritten preface by Herbert Read inserted loose. Also contains newspaper cuttings from various sources: The Times Literary Supplement, January 15th and 29th, February 12th 1949 The Observer, 28th November 1948 and The Listener, 30th December 1948. The cuttings contain reviews of Paul Klee's On modern art and comments on the translation by Paul Findlay. The Times Literary Supplement articles include correspondence following their review from Paul Findlay, Herbert Read and Your reviewer. The article from the Observer is a review of the book by Geoffrey Grigson and the Observer article is by Eric Newton and is entitled Paul Klee on art . A copy of Herbert Read's correspondence to the editor of the Times Literary Supplement together with a covering letter addressed to Alan Pryce Jones, dated 17.1.49, is also inserted loose together with a subsequent letter to Mr Pryce Jones dated 29 January 1949 and signed Herbert Read
