Description

Comprises a notebook containing the lectures apparently transcribed by David Watson. The lectures appear to have been delivered by Patrick Copland at Aberdeen. Although the lecturer has used some sources, such as William Nicholson's 'Introduction to Natural Philosophy' he generally speaks with his own voice. The Scottish connection is particularly strong; for example, the text refers at one point to Reid and 'James Gregory of Aberdeen'. It also refers at one place to 'Dr Blair's paper in [the] Transactions' - presumably Blair's paper in the 'Edinburgh Transactions' c. 1794, which suggests that some of the material may have been added in 1794. There are a few slips - e.g. the text refers to 'Dr Durin' at one point instead of Jurin, but that may be the transcriber's error.

Biography or history

There is a David Watson (son of David Watson in Fordon Kincardineshire) listed in the class at Marischal College, Aberdeen that went through in the period 1791-1975. He would therefore have been studying natural philosophy under Patrick Copland in 1793-94. He was also the Gray mathematics bursar in 1794 and ended up teaching as a school master in Cromarty. For the reference see P. J. Anderson (ed.), Fasti Academiae Mariscallanae Aberdonensis, 2:373.
