The text of this edition is based on Pynson's first ed. ([1492?]), which had been corrected by comparison with a copy of Caxton's second ed. ([1484?]). Ten of the 18 woodcuts are from the blocks used in Pynson's first ed., 6 are copies & 2 are new (for full descriptions, see Hodnett).
This, his "The boke of fame" (STC 5088) & his "The boke of Troylus and Creseyde" (STC 5096), "may be called the first edition of Chaucer's works".--cf. STC (2nd ed.).
