The engraved frontispiece portrait (plate), which is the first published portrait of Milton, is signed: W.M. sculp:, i.e. William Marshall.
The first leaf is blank.
"Joannis Miltoni Londinensis Poemata" has separate dated title page, pagination, and register. It was probably also issued separately (cf. Wing M2159). "A mask of the same author presented at Ludlow-Castle, 1634" has separate dated title page; pagination and register are continuous.
Variant: last line of imprint has "in Pauls" in place of "in S. Pauls".

Issue without 'S' before 'Pauls' in imprint, generally considered to be the first. The title-page for the Latin poems 'Joannis Miltoni Londinensis Poemata... [etc.] is supplied from another copy. Early manuscript list of contents for the English poems on p.[ii] and for the Latin poems on the verso of p.87 of that part and recto of the following terminal blank leaf. Blank leaf preceding frontispiece portrait by William Marshall conjugate with a4. Early signature 'E libris Josephi Moyle' and initials (?) BC in manuscript on title-page. In slipcase lettered POEMS MILTON LONDON 1645
