Description

A translation of Horace's "Ars poetica".


With an additional title page, engraved, signed "W.M. sculpsit" (i.e. William Marshall), with imprint "London. Printed for John Benson. 1640". Variant 1: this imprint reads "London. Printed for J. Benson and are sold by W. Ley at Paules-Chayne. 1640".


"Ben: Ionson's execration against Vulcan", "The masque of the gypsies", and "Epigrams to severall noble personages in this kingdome" each have separate dated title page; pagination and register are continuous. "Vulcan" and "Epigrams" are reprinted from "Ben: Jonsons execration against Vulcan", 1640. "The masque of the gypsies" begins its main text with the heading: The gypsies metamorphos'd.


The first leaf and the last leaf are blank; the second bears an imprimatur.


D6-10 and E5-11 are cancelled by gatherings d¹1²2 and e¹1²2 respectively. Variant 2: cancellanda present.


"The masque" identified as STC 14777a, and "Epigrams" as STC 14765, on UMI microfilm reel 757 (British Library copy).

Wanting [3] pages before F1. Additional title-page, engraved has imprint: London. Printed for John Benson. 1640 . Cancellanda of D6-10 and E5-11 are not present. Blank leaves corresponding to the blank A1 and G12 are present, but the latter may be unoriginal and the former is probably so (number of chain-lines). In red morocco binding by Riviere. With stamp of Vernon J. Watney
