Description
J.D. = John Donne.
Printer's name from STC.
The first leaf and the last leaf are blank.
The position of ²2A²2 ("The printer to the understanders") varies, but most commonly falls after ¹1A2. It is sometimes missing, being apparently a slightly later addition.
2N1 is a cancel, lacking running title on recto. Variant: 2N1 is cancellandum, with running titles but omits last 2 lines of text, which instead appear on the verso.
Identified as STC 7045a on UMI microfilm reel 922 (Folger Shakespeare Library copy).
Indexed in: STC (2nd ed.), 7045.
Indexed in: Keynes, G. Donne (4th ed.), 78.
Indexed in: Pforzheimer, 296.
Additional description
Wanting first and last leaves (blank). With the two inserted leaves 'The printer to the understanders' between the epistle and page 1; page 273 (2N1) is in the original uncorrected state with 35 lines of text (and lacks running title). Errors in pagination are precisely the same as those enumerated by Keynes. Damage to pp.113-4, slightly affecting text. A few early minor textual emendations in ink and pencil. Bookplate of Paul R. Reynolds, Jr. pasted inside front cover
