B2 BENHAM FB Captain, RFA (Royal Field Artillery). Xeroxed copy of letter from him to his brother George dated 25th May 1915 when he was acting as Forward Observation Officer "on the fringe of the big conflict around Ypres" and telling of his comfortable billet. Photocopy of letter dated 7th October 1915 from RN Barracks Copenhagen where "Uncle Geoff" is apparently interned. Photocopy of newspaper obituary of Captain FB Benham. Sent by Mr W.Benham.


B3 BEDDING E. Letter to his wife dated 12th July 1915 which describes a visit to an English War Cemetery and the condition of the graves.No indication of Regiment.

E2 & E3 EASTWOOD GH 2nd Lieutenant /Major King's Own Hussars (3rd) and RFC (Royal Flying Corps); CFS Graduation Certificate No 294 dated 23rd Dec 1914, group photographs of Officers, NCO's and men taken post-war in Germany, Christmas card from an officer interned in Holland with a satirical postcard and an illustration of Dutch Government Internment Centre, typescript copy (with annotations in pencil and ink) of a document dated 1st May 1914 outlining a scheme for British businessmen in Holland to set up 'earths' for the rescue of aviators (presumably British) forced to land in Holland in the event of war and thus to avoid internment. (As Sir Geoffrey Eastwood): Photographs of the Princess Royal in uniform and regalia: photographs of Eastwood with Lady Churchill and one other; group photograph including Princess Alice and Winston Churchill with programme of Official Opening of Nixon Cadet Block at the Canadian Services College in 1955 by the Princess Royal,Royal Maundy Order of Service at

F1 FENWICK T. With the Hawke Battalion at Gallipoli. Photocopy of a letter from him to brother, Johnson dated 23rd July 1915 telling him of his work with the wounded and the conditions there.


F2 FORBES G. A South African serving with an Infantry Regiment and later in the RFC (Royal Flying Corps). Pages from 'The Moth' magazine containing printed extracts of his diary 24th June - 14th Sept 1916.

G1 GAMBLE E. Sometime with the Hampshire Regt as a Medical Orderly. Mss recollections of his life, scant coverage of war service, assorted photographs, some of nurses and wounded soldiers, French and Belgium paper money, probably that used during German occupation, Motor Fuel Ration Book issued following Suez Crisis in 1957.


G2 GILDERDALE SH. Photocopies of 2 letters, to his mother dated 16th Sept 1916 and 1 to 'Jessie' dated 15th Oct 1918? See correspondence of Ruth Smith in Research File.


G3 GREEN A. Photocopy of letter to his wife dated 28th March 1918 describing his experiences during the German offensive including shelling, counter attacks and air raids. Sent by Mrs MN Green.


G4 GREENE J Medical Officer, DSO ( Distinguished Service Order), MC (Military Cross); Photocopies of 4 letters written by him in October 1917 having moved into captured German positions.


G5 GREW B Rifleman, 1st Battalion, London Rifle Brigade. Photocopies of 2 letters from him dated June 1916, also small sketches and photocopy of letter from 'D' Company Commander informing that he was missing in action on 1st July 1916, photocopy of German Red Cross card presumably confirming his death. Via Dr G Moore and his contact with Mrs A Schuman.


G6 GRIFFIN J Private, "C" Company, 12th Battalion, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry Regiment; Letter from his father seeking confirmation and details of his death reported as from wounds or killed in action April 1918.


G7 GREY W. 2 letters and a Red Cross postcard from his brother serving with the American Expeditionary Force, also a letter from a friend in the Black Watch en route to India.


G8 GAINSBOROUGH Dr H RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps) A few individual and group photos.

G9 GRAHAM L 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA). Commissioning Scroll, Movement Order for his posting to France and Mss recollections well detailed on the German offensive in March 1918.


G10 GOODWIN EL Lieutenant, 17th Battalion, Manchester Regt. GOODWIN LC 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Engineers (Signals). Photocopies of letter from EL Goodwin dated 20th August 1916 and a typescript of letter describing his death in action on 12th October 1916, Concert Party programme 'The Gaities', 5th Army HQ 28th August 1918. LC Goodwin diary July 19th- Oct 4th 1918, letter dated 26th January 1919 describing reduction of his unit to 'cadre'. Tape recorded- Self No 683.

H1 HALL DJ Sapper, 2nd Field Squadron, Royal Engineers. 2 letters from him acknowledging gifts of cigarettes, in one he tells of Belgian children selling cigarettes to soldiers in the firing line and in the other of his low opinion of the Germans and their treacherous behaviour after surrendering. Donor: Dr E Churches (see Women's Correspondence).


H2 HANAGAN JG (die 1973). 19th Battalion, Kings Liverpool Regiment. 2 photographs of 'A' Company of the Battalion and 4 small photographs, without captions, apparently taken in the Middle East, newspaper cuttings of letters sent by him recounting incidents in Gallipoli and on the W/F.


H3 HEAPS W Captain, RGA (Royal Garrison Artillery); Photographs, mainly of Hipsford which appears to have been a Coastal Defence Battery on the South Coast,there being no captions other than the location, and most are of groups of men with some of the guns. Donor: Mrs J Taylor (daughter)


H4 HOLLINS F Private, 'A' Company, 1st Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment; 3 letters to 'Fred', the first in June 1915 when he has been placed on a Draft for the BEF, the second giving his impressions of being at the Front and the devastation, and the third in similar vein.


H5 HOUSE G. 2 Trench maps (very tattered) and map of the Hindenberg Line printed by the Royal Engineers in April 1940; brief diary of the War from a newspaper.
