Biography or history

Burgess JG (Jack). Born in St Albans. Worked as painter and decorator. Enlisted 15 Aug 1914. Served in 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers on the Western Front during the First World War, including at the Battle of St Eloi. Promoted to Sergeant on the field for conspicuous bravery, 23 Mar 1916. Severely wounded at Bazentin-le-Grand, 15 Jul 1916. Honourably discharged, 2 Aug 1917.
