The file contains 22 letters (some with envelopes): W. H. Fear to wife, Alice Fear, and daughters, May and Ruby (1910-1916), Alice Fear to W. H. Fear (1916), F. D. & H. Stockdale to W. H. Fear on the award of the MC (Military Cross) (1916), Lieutenant A. Woodhead to Alice Fear on W. H. Fear's death (1916) and also transcripts and explanatory notes by donor.
There are 13 original and copy photographs from W. H. Fear's service in India including regimental groups, view of Dalhousie, portrait of then Major-General Kitchener, HMT Sicilia; 14 photographs from WH Fear's service with Leeds University Officer Training Corps (OTC) some of which were sent as postcards from summer camps, dated 1910-1912, and which include the Memorial Parade, on 20 May 1910, Leeds.
The file includes a photocopied cartoon of W. H. Fear from the cover of the Leeds University OTC journal; 7 photographs and drawings (some photocopied) from W. H. Fear's service on the Western Front (also 4 photocopied notes and receipt); 6 photographs, copy prints & photocopies of W. H. Fear's death notice, grave and Blight Valley Cemetery, with Imperial War Grave Commission information and a 'Leeds Mercury' photograph of posthumous medal presentation ceremony.
There are 6 photographs of the Fear family and friends and also the photocopied birth certificate of Alice May Fear, Dalhousie, India, 1906; 4 photographs of members of the Leeds University OTC during later military service (including George and Guy Stockdale and H. Winters and explanatory notes about photographs and other background information compiled by the donor.
Biography or history
Fear, William Henry (1874-1916). Born in Leicester. Enlisted in 1st Battalion, Prince of Wales Own West Yorkshire Regiment in 1894, serving as Colour Sergeant in India, 1905-1910. Seconded as Colour Sergeant Instructor with Leeds University OTC (Officer Training Corps) 1910-1914. Recalled in 1914 as Sergeant Major 8th Battalion, Prince of Wales Own West Yorkshire Regiment (Leeds Rifles, Territorial Army). Later Regimental Sergeant Major of the combined 1/8th Battalion formed following heavy losses on the Western Front. Killed in Action Authuille (Albert) Somme 14 July 1916. MC (Military Cross).
