Description
Six volumes of the extremely rare German edition of Blaeu's atlas. This seems to be all that were published with German text, according to Tiele's Nederlandsche Bibliographie, 1884. This edition was not recorded by Phillips as being in the Library of Congress, Washington, but he quoted Tiele to the effect that six volumes had been published, with Latin, French, Dutch and German texts, up to 1655. From 1662 onwards the atlas was much enlarged but the texts were in Latin, French, Dutch and Spanish only. There seems to be no record of German text having been further used. From a pictorial and decorative point of view Blaeu's maps have never been surpassed. By various cartographers, the maps are beautifully engraved and ornamented with heraldic crests, coats of arms, drawings of the inhabitants of the various countries in their national costumes, allegorical figures and finely designed cartouches, etc.--Whitaker: The Harold Whitaker Collection... Univ. of Leeds, 1947, p. 131.
