Description
This atlas is made up of the maps (drawn by E. Noble and engraved by J. Cary) originally used to illustrate the first edition of Gough's Camden's Britannia of 1789; now considerably revised for use in the second edition of his Britannia of 1806. The maps in the Brotherton Library copy are actually printed on paper watermarked 1808, and one county map, Surrey, shows the "Iron Railway" from Wandsworth via Croydon and Merstham to Reigate and Godstone, which had not been shown on the map of Surrey in the early issues of this atlas, or even in the early issues of the Britannia of 1806.--Whitaker: The Harold Whitaker Collection... Univ. of Leeds, 1947, p. 61.
