Description

An elaborate series of maps, many if not all of which were first published by John Hinton, from 1749 to 1752. They were republished and redated from 1753 by John Tinney, but the full set is not definitely known to have been completed until ca. 1760, when they were published jointly by T. Bowles, J. Bowles & Son, J. Tinney and R. Sayer, as in this copy. The earliest known title-page, here missing, was issued by these publishers.--Whitaker: The Harold Whitaker Collection... Univ. of Leeds, 1947, p. 49.

Taken as a set, the maps are on a larger scale and more comprehensive than any previously issued; nevertheless a considerable number show strange distortions, being too wide from east to west. The lines of longitude are less accurately shown that on Morden's maps of 1695. The errors were widely copied on maps in other works. An important feature of this series is that the spaces around the county boundaries are filled by descriptive and historical notes.--Whitaker, p. 49.

Maps by Emanuel Bowen and Thomas Kitchin.
