Description
This appears to be a later edition of Saxton's maps than has hitherto been recorded. Whitaker thought the last edition was that by Jefferys, about 1749, in which Wildley's imprints had been somewhat imperfectly erased from the maps, and Jeffery's imprint replaced that of Wildley on the title-page. The Brotherton Library copy of this edition has the title-page missing (or perhaps it was no longer used) and the engraved plates were so worn that the formerly imperfectly erased Wildley imprints have now completely disappeared, whereas in the case of Lancashire, for instance in Jefferys' edition, it could still easily be read. The large folding map of Yorkshire has been replaced by Sutton Nicholl's map of 1711, now with the date imperfectly erased and Overton's imprint replaced by "Printed & Sold by Dicey & Co: in Aldermary Church-Yard... London". The firm of Cluer Dicey or Dicey & Co. flourished from 1764 to 1792, producing a large number of prints and views. Cluer Dicey printed a new edition
of Speed about 1770, so that he may well have got possession of the plates of Saxton's maps as well as those of Speed. This would indicate that Saxton's plates were used for about two hundred years--Whitaker: The Harold Whitaker Collection ... Univ. of Leeds, 1947, p. 18.
