Description

Panzer, VI, 27, no. 12. Schmidt, I, 60. Muther 557. Kristeller: Strassburger Bücher-Illustration, 99 and p. 32 ff.

Roman, Gothic and Greek type (Proctor 9888); 31-34 lines of text, 71-74 lines of commentary. Title printed in red. With colophon. Publisher's device (Heitzd Alsace, I, 1) on f. xxxiiiia at end.

Several folios wrongly numbered.

Edited by Sebastian Brant, with the commentaries of Servius Maurus Honoratus, Aelius Donatus, Cristoforo Landino, Antonio Mancinelli and Domizio Calderini, and the thirteenth book of the Aeneid by Maffeo Vegio.

Illustrations: 214 woodcuts, comprising one on the t.-p., 10 for the Eclogues, 39 for the Georgics, 143 for the Aeneid, and 21 for the miscellaneous poems at the end. Many ornamental and historiated initials (Jennings, p. 47, 160). The illustrations to the Georgics depict the daily life and occupations of the 17th century Alsatian farmer, and all the cuts were apparently inspired by Sebastian Brant.
