Description

First state of this edition.

This, the earliest atlas issued by Cary, was an important milestone in the history of county cartography. It introduced a new high standard of draughtsmanship and engraving, which, coupled with improved cartographical material being available due to the numerous recent large-scale survey of the counties, made this atlas a great advance on any previous work of its kind. Each map has the imprint "London: Published as the Act directs, Sepr. 1st 1787 by J. Cary, Engraver, Map & Print-seller... [etc.]"--Whitaker: The Harold Whitaker Collection ... Univ. of Leeds, 1947, p. 54.
