Description
The fifth volume of a 6-volume work, known as 'Civitates orbis terrarum', all, except the sixth volume, by George Braun assisted by Franz Hogenberg, who was mainly responsible for the engravings.
Engraved part-title-page, but no general title-page.
In this volume, Braun's name only appears in dedication, as 'Georgius Braunius Agrippinas'.
69 numbered double-page engravings, uncoloured, most with accompanying descriptive text on recto and verso, except for no.27, Antwerp, where an unsigned separate, large folding plan of the city on thin papaer is accompanied by 2 text leaves. Many of the engravings are signed 'Georgius Houfnaglius' and variously dated between 1567 and 1597; a few are signed 'Henricus Ranzovius'.
Additional description
An additional double-page unsigned plan of 'Javarinum sive Raab', 1598, smaller than the norm and not included in the index, is inserted between the 2nd and 3rd leaves of the index. 'Jan.14. 1765' written inside front cover pencil signature 'R. Burnett' on p.[2] armorial bookplate of Colonel and Mrs J. Forbes Leith of Whitehaugh pasted inside front cover (partially removed)
