Also, letter of congratulation on escape, from Clive Wigram on behalf of George V, telegram invitation to lunch at Windsor Castle (1917); Medals (Military Cross, 1914 Star ("Mons Star"), War Medal 1914-1920, Victory Medal 1914-1918, Defence Medal 1939-1945, War Medal 1939-1945); Turkish flag and explanatory note (1917); 31 volumes of 'Journal', 1932-1980; 6 CD-RWs containing Ratcliffe's journals from No. 10, June 1941 - No 30, Feb 1976; sardine tin with hidden maps intended to aid escape from POW camp.

Biography or history

Ratcliffe, Bertram Louis (1893-1992). Captain, 1st Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment, serving on the Western Front and in Palestine. Held POW (Prisoner of War) but escaped. Awarded MC (Military Cross).

Provenance

The papers were placed in the Collection by G Brotherton Ratcliffe (nephew); the framed items and Turkish flag were placed in the Collection by Evelyn Ratcliffe (widow) in May and July 2001; the Journal was placed in the Collection by Evelyn Ratcliffe (widow) in October 2005
