The fool of the world was acted by the New Stage Club at the Victoria Hall, Bayswater, on April 5, 1906. Some of the shorter poems in this volume are printed separately in 'A Book of twenty songs', published by Messrs. J. M. Dent and Co.

With a poem, Gypsy song. (For Fenella), in the author's handwriting, signed by him, and dated January 1, 1908, on the flyleaf. Fenella Lovell (i.e. Lillian Mortimer) was an artist's model who claimed to be a Romany and often sat for painters of Gypsy subjects. Inserted is a short biography of Lillian Mortimer, typed, and signed by Eleanor Farjeon, on a sheet of her notepaper
