Biography or history

MacDonell, Ian H. Pilot, serving with the RFC (Royal Flying Corps) on the Western Front, 1914-1915; Captain, serving with the1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry in Mesopotamia, Mar-June 1916; Major, serving with the 2nd Inniskilling Fusiliers on the Western Front, Apr-Aug 1917; Lieutenant Colonel, serving with the 1st Dorset Regiment. Later Training Officer in the United Kingdom and Major serving with the 18th Highland Light Infantry in Germany, 1919-1920. Wounded in action on the Western Front, 1917. Awarded the Distinguished Service Order. Also served as Lieutenant Colonel, West African Field Force, on the Gold Coast in 1927, after which he retired. He had previously served in East Africa, West Africa, Sudan and in the Boer War (Imperial Yeomanry), 1898-1914. He changed his Christian name from Daniel to Ian in 1916.
