Description

The first accrual contains photocopies of discharge and protection certificates; Connaught Rangers' group photograph; Connaught Rangers' cap and tunic buttons; brass souvenirs including a matchbox case inscribed with the name A. S. Bolden; Special order to the 66th Division (17 November 1918); newspaper article about the Battle of Le Cateau reprinted from The Morning Post.


The second accrual contains photographs of pilgrimages, reunions and wreath laying ceremonies relating to the Salonika/Gallipoli campaign; 1983-88; papers and letters relating to the Salonika Society 1983-2004; booklet & papers relating to the Connaught Rangers.

The second accrual also includes 4 photographs of Harry Downs. A photocopy of a newspaper article from 'The Kent Messenger' of 1971 provides a brief biography of Downs and celebrates Downs' and his wife's 50th wedding anniversary. There is a similar article from 'The Kent and Sussex Courier' of 1971. Gladys Downs was probably in the Army Pay Corp in WW1. Also includes a photocopy of a photograph of Harry in 1944 and another of Harry and Gladys with his sons John and Robert.

Biography or history

Downs, H W V. (1895-1983) Sergeant, 2nd Battalion and 5th Battalion, Connaught Rangers, serving in Salonika, Egypt and on the Western Front. He married Gladys M. Telling in 1921.

Provenance

The first accession was placed in the Collection by John P. Downs (son). See Research Correspondence File. The second accession of material relating to the Salonika Association, the booklet relating to the Connaught Rangers etecetera was deposited in 2017 by Peter Downs (grandson).
