Description

Title within ornamental border; initials, head and tail pieces; stanzas below woodcuts in red.

The facsimile of Veldener's book is reproduced from J. Ph. Berjeau's facsimile edition, entitled: Geschiedenis van het heylighe cruys; or, History of the holy cross... London, 1863. The present legend, rhymed by an unknown Dutch author, was very likely the translation of a Latin one, affixed to the original block book of the Historia sanctae crucis, sawn in pieces by Veldener to use separately the woodcuts in a quarto book.

The introduction contains an extract from Caxton's translation of the Golden legend (p. xix-lxi) on the 'Invention' or, finding of the holy cross, with reproductions of Fisher's drawings of fresco paintings formerly in the Chapel of Trinity church at Stratford-upon-Avon.
