Description

With an additional title page, engraved: Mercurius rusticus, the country's complaint.

"Mercurius rusticus: or, The countries complaint of the sacriledges, prophanations, and plunderings, committed by the schismatiques on the cathedrall churches of this kingdome" has separate title page [p.175] with imprint "Oxford, printed in the yeare, 1646"; pagination and register are continuous. It is a new edition of the periodical 'Mercurius rusticus' which was issued irregularly at Oxford by Ryves between May 20, 1643 and March 16, 1644. The first part [to p.173] reprints nos.1-17, adding an extra no.18, and deals with individual cases of Royalist hardship; the second part reprints the original no.18 with 19-21, renumbering them 1-4, which deal with damage to and desecration of cathedrals. (For fuller details, see Madan 1890).

"Querela Cantabrigensis: or, a remonstrance by way of apologie, for the banished members of the... University of Cambridge. By some of the said sufferers" has separate title-page with imprint: Oxoniae, Anno Dom. 1646. The signatures begin at A. [12],34,[6] p. Generally attributed to John Barwick, dean of St. Paul's. Sometimes wrongly attributed to Ryves. All before p.29 was originally issued separately, Oxford, 1646 (Madan 1889). This edition includes additional material, (pp.29-34) 'Mercurius rusticus, &c. 5' with running titles amended accordingly, dealing with Peterborough cathedral, and four lines of errata to 'Mercurius rusticus' (covering errors in the text from pages 16 to 158); two leaves, 'The table of Mercurius rusticus', but not indexing the Peterborough account; one leaf, 'The table of Querela Cantabrigensis'. "A fairly temperate and detailed account of the very bad treatment accorded to Cambridge Royalists 1642-5" (Madan).

"Mercurius Belgicus: or, a briefe chronologie of the battails, sieges, conflicts, and other most remarkable passages from the beginning of this rebellion, to the 25. of March, 1646. Together with a catalogue of the persons of quality slain on both sides" (Anon., by Sir George Wharton) has separate title-page with imprint: Printed in the yeare, 1646. [64] p. Signature D as bound consists of 6 leaves, and [p.48], signature D6b, completes the 1644 account with "The End" at the foot of the page. The "Catalogue of the names" of the slain at the end of the book is supplemented by a list of 5 names on the leaf immediately preceding the first page of text of "Mercurius rusticus" at the beginning of the volume. Signatures B-D originally issued as "Englands Iliads in a nutshell", 1645 (Madan 1794). Includes Laud's speech on the scaffold, and, in verse, "Elegie upon the never-enough lamented death of Sir Hen: Gage, the most desired governour of Oxford" (died January 11, 1645). Further updated in 1647
as "Micro-chronicon".

According to Madan, the whole volume in this form was probably issued early in July, 1646.

Anon., by Bruno Ryves.
