Description

First edition, containing Preface, Secret history of the Calves-Head Clubb, and anniversary 'anthems' only; republished annually, with various additions, up to 1713, the 1708 edition entitled 'The republican unmasked' and that for 1713 'The Whigs unmask'd'.

By Edward Ward. Ward is now usually accredited with authorship, although it is unlikely he was responsible for the work as a whole (cf. Troyer, H.W.): Ned Ward of Grub Street, 1946, (chapter 6); it has also been attributed to Benjamin Bridgewater, credited in the Preface with authorship of the 'anthems'; also attributed to John Dunton (ESTC). - "[The anthems] are said to have been written by Mr. Benj. Bridgewater..." (Preface, p.4) under the erroneous assumption this was a pseudonym used by him (cf Parks, S.: John Dunton and the English book trade, 1976, item 317).

Includes several satirical poems.

Indexed in: ESTC t105975.
