Description
The first piece is a reply to Baron Hervey's attack on Pope entitled 'An epistle from a nobleman to a doctor of divinity'. The second piece, 'Horace versus Fannius [i.e. Hervey]' is an abridgement of Ben Jonson's play 'The poetaster', act V, sc. III.
The third piece has a separate title-page with legend 'The belle-man of St. James's his verses for the year 1733. Extracted from the Nobleman's epistle. As they were spoken every night of the holidays by J. Stuart, beadle and bellman.', and is a pastiche of the 'Nobleman's epistle'.
The first piece is "signed" W. Sh-w-n.
The first piece is ascribed without evidence to Pope in "N. & Q." ser.5, XII, 477.
