Description

The file contains photocopies of letters from Ackroyd to his daughter, Ursula. Alos includes letters of condolence to his wife Mabel after his death in August 1917. There are photographs of Ackroyd and his family.

Biography or history

Ackroyd, Harold (1877-1917). Ackroyd married Mabel Robina Smythe in 1908. A captain, RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps), serving with the 6th Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment, on the Western Front, he was part of the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) in France. Killed by a sniper on 11 August 1917 at Ypres, Belgium, Ackroyd was awarded the Victoria Cross and the Military Cross.

Provenance

The papers were placed in the Collection by E. J. Malet de Carteret (great-grandson). The original condolence letters are in the possession of Christopher Ackroyd (grandson).
