A variant title-page (with a three line imprint) is sometimes found with second edition sheets for volume three. The other two volumes being genuine first editions.--cf. Worthington.
In all volumes the preliminary fold, (half-title and title) was set in duplicate with short Oxford rule either regular or reversed. The verso of the title page is either blank or has the printer's imprint: "Printed by James Ballantyne and Co. Edinburgh." --cf. Todd and Bowden.
With printer's imprint: "Edinburgh: Printed by James Ballantyne and Co." found at the end of each volume.
In volume 2, p.119, l. 4 the first word in earlier copies is '"Here'. In later copies the 'H' seems to have dropped out leaving only '" ere'. (In the second edition the word has been adjusted to '"There'.).
In volume 2, Y2 is in duplicate setting, p. 338 either with l. 16 last word 'ha-' and no press-figure or with l. 16 'having' and press-figure '6'.--cf. Todd and Bowden.
