Description
Vol. 1 was first issued 1673, as a separate work, under the title "Observations, topographical, moral, and physiological, made in a journey through part of the Low-countries, & c.," which here appears as caption title, and includes, as did the first edition of 1673, the travels of Francis Willughby.
Vol. 2 has title "A collection of curious travels and voyages. Containing Dr. Leonhart Rauwolff's Journey into the eastern countries, viz. Syria, Palestine, or the Holy Land, Armenia, Mesopotamia, Assyria, Chaldea, & c. Translated from the original high Dutch, by Nicholas Staphorst. And also, travels into Greece, Asia, Minor, Egypt, Arabia Felix, Petraea, Ethiopia, the Red Sea, & c. Collected from the observations of Mons. Belon, Prosper Alpinus, Dr. Huntingdon, Mr. Vernon, Sir George Wheeler, Dr. Smith, Mr. Greaves, and others. To which are added three catalogues of such trees, shrubs and herbs as grow in the Levant. By the Rev. John Ray, F. R. S." (First issued l693 in 2v. as a seperate work). This is the third edition of this collection, not the second as claimed on the title-page. It omits Ray's dedication to Robert Southwell, the booksellers' preface, and Rauwolf's dedication of his travels. Bound at the end is Ray's "Catalogus stirpium in exteris regionibus...[etc]" (Keynes 22a). This
properly belongs to the second edition of his "Observations" (vol.1 of this set), but is often found bound as here.
The inner forme of sig.c (pp.33-48) of the "Catalogus stirpium in exteris regionibus" has been wrongly imposed.
The "Catalogue of plants" in v.l and the "Tree catalogue in v.2 are in Latin, each having special t. p. and separate paging.
Indexed in: Keynes 22 (vol.1), 96 (vol.2).
