Description

T.J. Wise (Ashley Library, vol.7, p.189) describes two undated variants of the first edition of this poem. This copy agrees with the first of these in having no imprint, and in preserving the reading (p.6, 1.14) "To gain some rich ground, avarice did force." In the second Ashley Library copy, and in subsequent editions of the poem, the line reads: "To gain some acres, avarice did force." A further point of interest is that the author's name is printed at the foot of the last page, whereas the first Ashley Library copy is anonymous and has the word "Finis" here. In the second Ashley Library copy as described by Wise, both the author's name and the imprint of Richard Marriot, in St. Dunstan's Churchyard, Fleet Street, appear at the foot of the last page.
