Description

At least two variants known to exist. One has added t.p. for the comedies with imprint: London: Printed for Bernard Lintott, between the two Temple-Gates in Fleet-street. The other has added t.p. with imprint: London: Printed for J. Knapton, Ralph Smith, George Strahan, and Bernard Lintott. The pages are otherwise identical.

Although described on the title-page as second edition [ie. second edition of the 'Comedies'] this is the first collected edition of the works.

Each play has a separate t.p. dated 1711, and pagination, but the register for the comedies is continuous.

The 'Comedies' have their separate general title-page, which differs from the first edition only in the punctuation and lineation of the imprint and in its ornament; their half-titles in the first edition have been replaced by title-pages to each play, each preceded by a plate; the collation, paginations and contents, are otherwise identical, except that from p. 67 of 'The beaux stratagem' the printed text has been expanded so that the epilogue falls on the last recto, there no longer being booklists on the final leaf.

Pagination: 79, [1]; [12], 69, [3]; [6], 64, [2]; [6], 51, [1]; [8], 57, [1]; [8], 64, [2]; [6], 70, [2]; [4], 72, [2] p.; [8] leaves of plates.

Contents: Poems, letters, and essays -- Love and a bottle -- The constant couple, or, A trip to the jubilee -- Sir Harry Wildair: being the sequel of the Trip to the jubilee -- The inconstant, or, The way to win him -- The twin-rivals -- The recruiting officer -- The beaux-stratagem.
