Description
See Wise, op. cit., vol. 1, pp.40-46. First spurious 4th ed. The paper has no watermark and was probably printed in 1812, immediately after Byron had suppressed the satire. It was set up from a copy of the 3rd authorised ed.; it has the misprint "crouds" for "crowds" in line 269, and consists of 1050 lines only. The imprint is at the foot of the last page and not on p. 85 as in the following spurious 4th eds. In line 285 "her alter burns" instead of "her altar burns", 'an error to be found in no other edition either spurious or genuine' (Wise). According to E.H. Coleridge, 'The works of Lord Byron. A new... edition', vol. 7 (1904), p.306, 'conclusive proof is not forthcoming' that this is a spurious issue. The t.p. is dated 1810. The succeeding spurious eds. are all dated 1811.
Half-title: English bards, and Scotch reviewers.
