Description
English nobleman = John Hervey, Baron Hervey? On the question of authorship, Foxon states: "Printed in Dodsley V as "by the late Lord Hervey"; it is transcribed in a commonplace book of his son, General William Hervey (Suffolk Record Office MSS 941/53/1) Foxon also mentions other attributions - to Lord Paget, and to Ashley Cowper, editor of "The Norfolk poetical miscellany", 1744, in which the poem is reprinted as "A dialogue between the poet and his friend" - but concludes "Despite the conflicting evidence, Hervey's authorship is much the most likely".
The imprint is false; printed in Dublin by George Faulkner, on the evidence of the ornament on p. [3].
Foxon H161.5.
