Description

Neither title-page appears to be recorded elsewhere. It seems possible that the first volume was circulated separately and not always issued as part of a 2-vol. set.

Vol.1.: Stub following title-leaf indicates a probable cancel title, although it is possibly that of Hh4.

Vol.1 concludes with a 6-page list of books sold by M. Wellington, the last 2 consisting of plays.

Epistle dedicatory (vol.1) signed Charles Gildon, followed by "The history of the life and memoirs of Mrs. Behn. Written by one of the fair sex", pp. 1-51, which is said to be largely fictitious by Montague Summers.

Title of vol.2 reads: The histories and novels written by... Mrs Behn. Vol. II ... The third edition.

In addition to the Histories and novels, vol. 2 includes a translation by Aphra Behn of Fontenelle's "Entretiens sur la pluralité des mondes" and "Histoire des oracles", also her "Essay on translation and translated prose". The last item is individually paged, and, correctly, has no separate title-page. The correct pagination is resumed at signature L, part way through preface to next item.

With the exception of the "Essay on translation", all items in vol. 2 have individual title-pages, all dated 1718, unlike items in vol. 1.

The title-leaf of vol. 2, probably a cancel, is affixed to a stub. "Printed" is misprinted "Printtd".

Epistle dedicatory to the first piece of vol. 2 is signed Sam. Briscoe.
