Description

Gothic type. Title within architectural border. The Canterbury tales, The Romaunt of the Rose, and The Story of Thebes: compiled by John Lidgate, monke of Bury, are each preceded by half-title within border showing the houses of York and Lancaster, terminating in Henry VIII. The portrait of Chaucer, preceding the life, has engraved border giving his "Progenie", with coats of arms, etc.


Many errors in numbering of leaves.


Signatures: 5 l. without sig., port., b-c⁶ (b1 num. c1), I-II, AIII-IV, A⁶, B-U⁶, Aa-Tt⁶, Uu-Xx, Yy-Zz⁶, Aaa-Zzz⁶, Aaaa⁶, Bbbb.

Inserted after f.140 are 2 leaves (ff.133-4, signed Aai-ii) from another edition. Above col. 1 of f.133r is a part-column extracted from another edition, providing 21 lines of text to connect with text of the inserted leaves. Inserted after f.368 are 4 leaves (ff.347-350, signed 3Oi-[iv] from Speght's 2nd ed. of Chaucer, containing "Chaucers ABC" and "Jack Upland". Wanting portrait and last errata leaf.
