Description

A libel on Mary of Modena, Queen consort of James II, and Louis XIV of France sometimes attributed to Gregorio Leti. Cf. NUC pre-1956.

Purports to be a translation from a French work printed by Pierre Marteau at Cologne, 1689 under title Les amours de Messalina, derniere reine d'Albion (p. 4.); the French work, however, states that it is "traduit de l'anglois." Cf. Graesse.

Consists of four separate parts with individual title pages. The first three parts have continuous pagination and signatures and are gathered in 2's, with watermark placed as for an 8vo. The fourth part is entitled, "The amours of the French king with the late Queen of Albion; being the fourth and last part of the history of Messalina", and is apparently part of a different edition, paginated [2], 33-54, signed "I" on p. 33 (part 3 ends with sig U) and gathered in 4's.

Frontispiece portrait of Louis XIV.

Wing (2nd ed.) A3023, S2299, T912, A3027 (in 1st ed only).
