Description

Born in Leeds, Armitage studied at Leeds College of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art in London. His figurative pieces depict the human form by means of flat surfaces modelled in plaster and cast in bronze, shaping the figure in new suggestive ways in response to the qualities and possibilities of his materials.

'Linked Figures' exemplifies the type of work which led to Armitage’s appointment as Gregory Fellow in Sculpture in 1953, and marked the beginning of his international success.
