Description

A second edition of the Ptolemy of Servetus, the first being that of 1535. The maps are from the same blocks as in the editions of Laurentius Fries in 1522 and W. Pirckheimer in 1525, both of which were printed in Strasburg. There are 50 maps, the fiftieth being the new map of the world produced by L. Fries in 1522, remarkable as being the first map with the name America that appeared in Ptolemy's work. The name is inscribed on a portion of the South American continent.--Whitaker: The Harold Whitaker Collection... Univ. of Leeds, p. 130.
