Description

The earliest complete Latin Bible printed in England.


Pts. 2-4 of the Old Testament, the Apocrypha (pt. 5), and the New Testament (pt. 6) have separate title pages, all dated 1579 except the last which is dated 1580, with imprint of Thomas Vautrollier, and a seperate sequence of signatures.


Imprint to New Testament: Londini : Excudebat T.V. typographus. impensis J.H., 1580.


Old Testament in 5 parts, pt. 2-5 have separate title pages; Pt. 2: Bibliorvm pars secvnda, id est libri historici Latini recèns ex Hebraeo facti ; Pt. 3: Biblbiorvm pars teria, id est, qvinqve libri poetici ; Pt. 4: Bibliorvm pars qvarta, id est, prophetici libri omnes, nvmero XVI ... ; Pt. 5: Libri Apocryphi, sive appeddix Testamenti veteris ad canonem priscae Ecclesiae adjecta.


New Testament has title: Iesv Christi D. N. Novvm Testamentvm e Lingva Syriaca latino sermone redditum.


Each title page has a title vignette: The good shepherd.

Tremellius' and Junius' version of the Old Testament, Junius' translation of the Apocrypha, which had first been published at Frankfurt a. M, 1575-1569 and Tremellius' translation of the New Testament, made from the Syriac, first published at Geneva in 1569.
