Description
Sandys dated the ms. for Europae speculum in April 1599; it remained in ms. form until a stolen copy of the ms. was entered in Stationer's Hall, 21 June 1605, as "A relation of the state of religion." Sandys had the high commission burn this printed version 7 Nov. 1605. He made corrections and additions to the pirated edition, and this version was printed at The Hague in 1629, 4to, as "Europae Speculum, or a View or Survey of the State of Religion in the Westerne parts of the World." An Italian translation of the 1605 edition was made by P. Sarpi, with his own additions, in 1625; G. Diodati in turn translated Sarpi's Italian edition into French in 1626. This Elsevier edition is a textual reproduction of Diodati's Geneva, 1626 edition. Cf. DNB; Willems.
