In his essay Den fyrste norske nasjonalhistoria (in Edda, nordisk tidsskrift for litteraturforskning. Kristiania, 1919. bd. XII, p. 90-121) Prof. Koht conjectures that the author of Historia Norvegiæ is "Magister Arnulv i Munkeliv, nemnd i eit brev fraa 1180-aara".
