Description
First edition.
Eight leaves per gathering; horizontal chain-lines.
"Con licencia de la santa Inquisicion".
"An extraveagant romance, yet founded upon facts. Numbers and distances are magnified; and everythinf embellished with great boldness. His history is not without its value, but must be consulted with extreme caution."--Bancroft, Hist. of U. S., ed. 1834, v. 1, p. 66.
[Written] forty years after Soto's death, professedly to do his memory justice. The spirit of exaggeration which prevails through-out the volume has deprived it of esteem as an historical authority... It is based upon conversations with a noble Spaniard who had accompanied Soto as a volunteer and upon the written but illiterate reports of two common soldiers--Alonzo de Carmona, of Priego, and Juan Coles, of Zabra."--Winsor, Nar. & crit. hist., v. 2, p. 290.
On the comparative trustworthiness of Garcilaso de la Vega, Biedma's narrative of De Soto's expedition and the "Relaçam verdadeira" of the knight of Elvas, see W. B. Rye's introduction to Hakluyt's translation of the latter, "The discovery and conquest of Terra Florida," Hakluyt society publications, v. [9] 1851, p. xviii-xxxv.
